A Pathway to Stability and Community Impact

In Southern Nevada, the line between stability and homelessness is alarmingly thin. Many residents are just one missed rent payment away from losing their homes—a precarious situation worsened by rising living costs and limited affordable housing options.

Recognizing employment as a cornerstone of homelessness prevention and community stability, HopeLink of Southern Nevada launched CareerLink in June 2021. This transformative program empowers individuals with the tools and opportunities necessary to achieve self-sufficiency, directly contributing to community impact by helping residents avoid homelessness.

Jordan’s Journey: A Success Story

Jordan’s story highlights the profound community impact of CareerLink. When he sought help through HopeLink’s Family Resource Center, he realized employment was the key to overcoming his challenges.

With CareerLink’s guidance, Jordan attended a job fair hosted by The Siegel Group for their new restaurant, Siegel’s Bagelmania. His hard work paid off—he was hired on the spot as a dishwasher. Thanks to CareerLink’s ongoing support, Jordan excelled in his role and earned recognition from his manager. Today, he is a valued employee and a powerful example of how community services like CareerLink can transform lives.

Tim Mullin, Director of Community Relations for The Siegel Group, praised the partnership with CareerLink, saying, “We know we are getting qualified, vetted candidates, which takes the strain off of our human resources department.”

Employment: A Critical Factor in Homelessness Prevention

Employment is one of the most effective tools for homelessness prevention, offering individuals the financial stability needed to maintain housing. Nevada’s affordable housing crisis leaves many residents vulnerable—there are only 14 affordable rental units available for every 100 low-income renters in Las Vegas. With 75% of renters earning less than 80% of the area median income cost-burdened by rent, housing insecurity remains a pressing concern.

In 2022, over 5,600 people experienced homelessness in Las Vegas, with more than half unsheltered. Job loss is often the leading cause, underscoring the importance of programs like CareerLink in stabilizing individuals and preventing homelessness. By addressing the root causes of instability, CareerLink can reduce homelessness and foster resilience.

Breaking the Cycle

The ripple effects of CareerLink’s community services extend far beyond initial employment. For many clients, this program is the starting point for breaking generational cycles of poverty and homelessness. Employment provides more than a paycheck—it restores dignity, builds self-esteem, and opens doors to opportunities that were previously out of reach.

Through ongoing mentorship and communication with both clients and employers, CareerLink ensures that individuals remain on a path to success. This focus on employment retention prevents clients from slipping back into unemployment and instability, making it a cornerstone of homelessness prevention.

Moreover, CareerLink’s partnerships with local organizations like Dress for Success and TechImpact amplify its community impact by providing clients with access to education, resources, and networks that promote long-term growth. By fostering these collaborations, CareerLink doesn’t just help individuals—it strengthens the entire Southern Nevada community. When individuals are given the tools to succeed, they reinvest their success into the community, contributing to a stronger, more stable Nevada for everyone.
