As we move into the summer season, HopeLink and their partners are gearing up for the 9th Annual Back 2 School Event taking place on August 21, 2010. For those who may not know, the yearly event provides backpacks stuffed with grade appropriate school supplies and a new back to school outfit for over 1,000 very low income children. Families who make 30% or less of the Area Median Income will register their K-12 children at the Henderson Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Club, Giving Life Ministries, Nevada State Welfare offices, Nevada Hand, St. Jude’s Ranch, or HopeLink. The goal is to insure that every child starts the first day of school eager and excited to begin the new educational year.
While Central Christian Church supplies all the backpacks and school supplies, HopeLink matches area businesses, faith communities and individual donors with one or more child and the “adopting” entities or persons shop for complete head to toe outfits so that every child has at least one new outfit suitable for school. Each adopter will receive a tag that provides all the information needed to shop for a specific child: shirt, pant, shoe, and underwear sizes and if a specific school uniform is needed.
In addition to the backpacks and clothing that children receive, there is also a resource fair for children and parents that will take place during the event. The fair provides families with information specific to low income households on after school programs, literacy and library programs, dental care, general health screenings and more.
As our economy struggles to make a comeback, this is the perfect “teachable moment” for families. Adopt a child in need and let your children help pick out clothing items for their adopted child. You’ll help create a generous and loving child and help a family in need at the same time. You and your family CAN make a difference in the life of a child.
